I think the little girl symbolizes innocence, and (for my personal exp.) innocence is the last casualty of war.

Killing children is cruel no exceptions but I can understand why war takes a toll not only on the people who were part of it but also those who served in these wars.

violence can never be forgotten

Before I begin this is my personal opinion, I am not saying anyone is right or wrong.
Yes, however, it is a necessary evil. Sadly enough we need war in order to advance more efficiently or to remove a threat to one's well being. 
Yes some war can be avoided, yet some is needed to accomplish a much greater goal
Personally I would be sad to see this happen in real life, however, I would be grateful that this child no longer has to experience war and hatred any longer.
